Wedding Wednesday: Year One
Hey y'all!! I would have to say this is the best blog post I have ever written and you can probably guess why...
Colin and I's anniversary is July 16th... TODAY!! I can't believe that time has gone by so quick and I'm sitting here one year later writing this! On the blog, I'm sharing a reflection about being married to the most amazing guy in the whole world! I promise it won't be all mushy... it will be a good read I can promise you that!!
So when you get married, everyone always asks you the same question over and over for the first whole year (at least it seems that way). “So, how’s married life?” If you’re married, you know exactly what I’m talking about! feel like it's a universal question for all us newlyweds. If your not married yet, you'll get the same question. I promise!
To give a little background for those who don't know, Colin and I met at Creighton University. I always knew who he was, (Creighton was a smaller school, you knew who everyone was or recognized them... at least that's how it seemed) but we never actually spoke until.... he messaged me on Facebook. I know totally cheesy! To this day I tell him he stalked me for the first year I was at Creighton (keep in mind he is one year older) He ended up getting some insight on me from one of my sorority sisters (but mostly he just creeped) To this day, he will always say I gave him my number, but we all know Freshman year... I don't fall for his story because he didn't start talking to me until that summer, so I think it's safe to say he just was too nervous to start a convo with me. Boys will be boys! Long story short we dated for four years, spring break of 2015 we got engaged! One day I'll do a flashback Thursday and share all about the proposal- I know a little out of order!
The summer we got engaged, we moved to Dallas and lived together for a year before we got married. That transition year was challenging. Learning how to live with each other was a challenge- but a good challenge that is. Every couple that lives together for the first time goes through some trial and errors. We are all human. I would have to say learning to live together before we said "I do" helped us learn more about each other. Some don't believe in co-habitation before marriage, but we don't really, so I thought living together before marriage worked out fine for us! I think it has helped!
So, when someone asked me the question… How’s married life? My initial thought was… well, not much has changed. We didn’t have this big moment "Aha Moment" of adjustments. We both felt like nothing had changed, except now we have a rings on our fingers and we call each other husband and wife. (that was a fun adjustment!)
Being married is such an amazing journey of life. However, at times it’s also hard. But knowing that I have my BEST FRIEND, soulmate and my biggest fan by my side forever is truly an incredible feeling. He has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. Without him, I don't know who'd ever get used to my craziness and full of nonsense (at times) self. He always just rolls with the punches and is always by my side through the hard times and good times. We have been through a lot this first year and with out a doubt he has given 100% support on everything we or I have ever done or wanted to do. I can’t even put into words what this feels like. He truly is my rock and the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I believe everyone is blessed with their soul mate in life and I can guarantee Colin is that for me.
With being married, it does come with it's challenges and if someone ever told you marriage is easy, they are lying to you. Every moment of your lives together your learning more and more. I love every moment good and bad. I find the biggest challenges of being a wife is that marriage is working as a team. I'm no longer in it for myself, I'm in it for us...forever. Day in and day out I strive to be the best wife I can be for my husband, wether that be making dinners while he is working on the house or doing the laundry when I had a long day. Whatever it may be, I strive to give my husband the grace he deserves.
We have been together for 6 years now and our first year of marriage was a big year for us! Within it all being a good wife to my husband means I treat my husband like the greatest gift. He truly is the greatest gift because he is AMAZING! He goes over and beyond what any husband would ever do. He supports me, comforts me. teaches new things to me, and gives me the most love! I love how he makes me feel like his number one. With all he does, showing him and telling him how amazing he is, is important because he deserves it!
Sitting here one year ago was such a magical day. I married the man of my dreams and lived out the dream every little girl dreams of when she's little. Crazy to think that we were sipping champagne, dancing our lives away, and spending an incredible night with all our loved ones just one year ago. It's crazy how time flies by!
Marriage is a blessing and I'm so happy to have that blessing in my life. I'm also so thankful to have such an incredible man in my life, I wouldn't want it any other way. We celebrate this amazing day by going to Fredericksburg, Texas (the Hill Country for all you non-Texans) for the weekend. Since our anniversary fell on a Sunday we drove back today and plan to sip on some champagne and eat some yummy anniversary cake!
Side note- most people eat their top tier of their wedding cake on this night, however since we got married in California that was a little challenging for us to keep. (see the funny pics below) I ordered a cake that wasn't exactly like our top tier, but it was a mixture of all the sweets we had on our wedding night!
Plus... it's your lucky day.. for all y'all who haven't seen our wedding video here it is (click here) We are going to watch this and I can promise you I will be water works!!
Have a great start of your week!
Love from Texas,
